1. Tobacco Situation in Bangladesh
• The smoking rate in rural areas is slightly higher (23.6%) than in urban areas (21.3%).
• In Bangladesh, 27.2% (25.9 million) of the adult population currently use smokeless tobacco. Prevalence is similar in males (26.4%) and females (27.9%).
• Overall, current tobacco use (smoking or smokeless) among all adults is 43.3% (41.3 million).
• There are 57,000 tobacco related mortalities and 382,000 disabilities occurring in Bangladesh every year (WHO, 2007).

2. Health Impacts on Tobacco using
• It also causes peripheral vascular disease and hypertension, all developed due to the exposure time and the level of dosage of tobacco. Furthermore, the earlier and the higher level of tar content in the tobacco filled cigarettes causes the greater risk of these diseases.

3. Environment and Economical Impact on Tobacco using

• Tobacco plants use more nutrients than many other crops, degrading the soil.
• Vast quantities of pesticides, fertilizer and herbicides are used on tobacco crops. Some crops requires over a dozen applications of pesticides during the three-month growing period.
• Tobacco use caused a net loss of BDT 26,000 million to the economy of Bangladesh in 2004.
• Each year a total of 1,200,000 people are infected in the 8 major tobacco related diseases.
